University Events for All New Students

Your orientation will be a unique experience, from the moment you set your bags in your room, until the alma mater is sung at Cornell Night. These university events are geared toward giving you and your classmates a shared orientation experience.

President's Events

Welcome Reception • Friday, August 18 • 4:00pm - 5:00pm • Rawlings Green
Students are welcome to bring their families to meet President David J. Skorton under the big tent on Rawlings Green located near Court Hall and Helen Newman Hall on North Campus. Enjoy some light refreshments at this casual reception with the President, other university administrators, faculty, and staff.

New Student Convocation • Saturday, August 19 • 9:00am - 10:00am • Barton Hall
This will be your official welcome from President David J. Skorton, as well as your student body president and other key student leaders.

The New Student Reading Project • The Great Gatsby

“Where are you from?” “What college are you in?” As a first-year student, you’re going to hear and ask a lot of questions like that. But you may also find yourself engaged in a conversation that begins, “Why does Gatsby reach for the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock?” The New Student Reading Project gives you an intellectual experience to explore with others who are new to Cornell. This year we have chosen F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, the quintessential story of the Jazz Age—the 1920s in America—”an age anxious to enjoy itself, anxious to forget the past, anxious to ignore the future.” You received a copy of the novel as well as study questions to review with this guide. All new students will participate in a community-wide panel presentation and small-group discussions, facilitated by a faculty member, during Orientation week. You have also been asked to write a short, one-page response to the novel which will be turned in to your discussion leader. They will not be graded, but the twenty best responses will receive cash prizes and be posted on the Reading Project website at http://reading.cornell.edu.
