This exam is optional for all new Biological & Environmental Engineering majors who wish to: a) earn credit for Math 191; or b) determine their placement in the First-Year Engineering Math sequence. 8:30am - 11:45am: Math Proficiency Examination
ALL new students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences must prove proficiency in math. It is the student’s responsibility to fulfill this requirement. Meeting locations and times will be posted outside the Counseling and Advising Office, 140 Roberts Hall. This is an important meeting for freshmen and transfer students to get acquainted with their advisors and to finalize course schedules for the fall semester.

Professor Saul Teukolsky (Chairman, physics) and Professor Carl Franck (Director, Undergraduate Studies, physics) will discuss the variety of career paths available for physics majors, choosing first-year courses, combining physics with study in other fields, and the many opportunities for becoming involved in physics research at Cornell.

7:00pm - 8:45pm: Open House • Goldwin Smith Hall
This is your chance to get information about subjects and particular courses you are interested in from the departments concerned (see page 10 for more details). At the First-Year Briefing II or Transfer Briefing, you will receive a list of all departments and programs represented at the Open House, along with their room and building locations. All will be in Goldwin Smith or Lincoln Halls.

Open House

  • Peer Advisors: Student peer advisors will be available on a walk-in basis throughout the Open House period.
  • Languages: For information about instruction in specific languages, contact the appropriate department: Africana Studies and Research Center (Swahili), Asian Studies (Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Nepali, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Tagalog, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese), Classics (Latin and Greek), German Studies, Near Eastern Studies (Arabic and Hebrew), Romance Studies (French, Italian, Portuguese, Quechua, and Spanish), Russian (Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, and Ukrainian).
  • Computer Science Courses: At the beginning of the Open House, a representative from the Department of Computer Science will give an overview of introductory courses and how to develop a coherent program of study in the computer and information sciences. The requirements and focus of the CS major will also be discussed. This presentation will be in Room B21, Lincoln Hall.
  • Department Information: Each department will inform students about its course offerings and major requirements. Some special programs will also be represented.

Meet Your Advisor!
See your faculty advisor to discuss your academic plans. Some advisors will have sign-up sheets on their office doors; some advisors will send you appointment times. If you are unsure of your appointment time, check with your advisor’s department or in the Advising Center in 55 Goldwin Smith Hall. This is an important meeting for first-year and transfer students to get acquainted with their advisors and to finalize course schedules for the fall semester.

This is the first meeting with colloquium instructors, the faculty advisors of first-year students. Information on site visits scheduled for Tuesday, August 22, will be distributed at this meeting. Rooms are announced at the New Student Orientation and Registration Meeting at 9:00am.

Tuesday, August 22
9:00am: Math Assessment • 305 Ives Hall
All new ILR students are required to take and pass a math competency exam. Please note: If you took AP Calculus in high school and scored a 3 or better on the AB, or on the BC exam, you have fulfilled the ILR math requirement and do not have to take this exam.

12:30pm: ILR First-Year Student Colloquium Site Visit • Location TBA
First-year students and faculty members will take part in a field trip to familiarize students with some of the issues and topics that will be addressed throughout the semester.

Wednesday, August 23
11:30am: Multicultural Student Information Sharing/Reception • ILR Conference Center Atrium
Become acquainted with programs and services offered at Cornell and in ILR that support diversity goals.

1:30pm: Student Peer Advisors Meet with New Students • 305 Ives Hall
New students will be introduced to their Student Advisors in 305 Ives and then will have an opportunity to meet in smaller groups for discussions. These peer advisors will serve as your ongoing Orientation counselors throughout your first semester in the ILR school.
